The losers: Astrologers, Alchemists, Magicians and their Values. On the Centenary of Lynn Thorndike’s History of Magic and Experimental Science

In 1923, Lynn Thorndike published the first volume of his History of Magic and Experimental Science which he continued until 1958. Against the scientism of George Sarton, he underlined the role of “pseudo-sciences” in the constitution of modern science where they apparently lost the fight. But in their time, they raised not only epistemological problems, but a number of ethical and socio-political questions: for astrologers, their role as experts in political decision-making, the relationship between astral fatalism and human freedom; among the alchemists, social responsibility, the pressure of power and the good use of wealth; magicians, with the distinctions between the natural and the supernatural, the notion of miracle and the power of man against the power of God. These subjects must be approached in the long term and from a cross-cultural perspective.
En 1923, Lynn Thorndike publiait le premier volume de son History of Magic and Experimental Science qu’il poursuivit jusqu’en 1958. Contre le scientisme de George Sarton, il soulignait le rôle des « pseudo-sciences » dans la constitution de la science moderne où elles ont, en apparence, perdu le combat. Mais à leur époque, elles ont posé non seulement des problèmes épistémologiques, mais quantité de problèmes éthiques et socio politiques : pour les astrologues, leur rôle d’experts dans la décision politique, le rapport entre fatalisme astral et liberté humaine ; chez les alchimistes, la responsabilité sociale, la pression du pouvoir et le bon usage des richesses ; les magiciens, avec les distinctions du naturel et du surnaturel, la notion de miracle et la puissance de l’homme face à la puissance de Dieu. Ces sujets doivent être abordés dans la longue durée et dans une perspective transculturelle.
