1. Cape Sounio Half Day Afternoon Tour

A half day afternoon trip from Athens full of images and breathtaking views. Begin your Sounio tour with a wonderful drive along the scenic coastal road which affords a splendid view of the Saronic Gulf, passing through some of Athens most beautiful suburbs and idyllic beaches. Arrive at Cape Sounio where you will visit the 5th century B.C. Temple of Poseidon with one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the world (on a clear day you can see at least seven islands). The precipice is a sheer 197-foot drop to the sea. Land masses to the west stand out in sharp profile: the island of Aegina backed by the mountains of the Peloponnese. The beauty of the surviving Doric columns has inspired many poets, including Lord Byron who carved his name on one of the columns. This half day excursion is a great option if you want to discover Greece beyond Athens, enjoy stunning views and visit world famous Greek monuments.

2. Science Walking Tour of Athens

Duration: 4-4.5 Hours

· The Archeological Site of Aristotle’s Lyceum
· The Old Athens Observatory
· Meton’s helioscope
· The Museum of the University of Athens

Activity info:
The tour will begin at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (conference venue) with a short walk to the archeological site of Aristotle’s Lyceum, his school where he taught. From there a bus will take you to the 19th-century Athens Observatory, located at the top of one Athens’ hills, just across the Acropolis. At the Observatory, which today is a museum, you will see various astronomical instruments and methods of 19th to 20th-century astronomy. Near there, you will visit the helioscope with which Meton of Athens (5th c. BC) made his calculations about the Sun. Finally, the tour will end at the museum of the University of Athens, the building of which is the first of the University founded after Greek independence during the first half of the 19th century. There you will explore the many scientific instruments used by the university throughout its existence, and find out about the development of science-teaching in Greece until the mid-20th century.
